I still love my Huxley

Even though I'm using the Mendel90 as my workhorse now, I still love using the Huxley for fine detail and fun stuff. I recently bought a rainbow pack from Faberdashery and have been getting used to printing with PLA again. The 0.3 mm nozzle seems to cope much better with PLA than it did with ABS.

I've uploaded a couple of videos to YouTube showing two recent models that printed really nicely. Hope you enjoy them.

Rich,

What you achieve with your Huxley fills me with joy! Some truly great prints :)

I noticed from your video that your inner perimeters are printed in the opposite direction to your outer perimeters. What version of Slic3r produces that? I have implemented that feature in the version of Slic3r with which I am currently playing, so I'm surprised to see it in your print.

Well spotted!

Yes, I have started compiling Perl so I could keep up with the development versions of slic3r, but the latest versions seemed too buggy to use. I had to revert to 0.8.3 for my serious work but when I saw you had forked slic3r I decided to give it a go. It works well for me and I like the new GUI. I'm undecided about the reversal in perimeters – I'd like to know more about the benefits of doing it that way. One problem I came across in some models was that circles sometimes didn't quite close up at the point of reversal leaving tiny gaps in the perimeter. General working well though.

The idea of the reversal is indeed to leave a small gap, so at the end of the outer perimeter, the filament is retracted whilst the head moves into that gap. This should eliminate any evidence of a blob on the outer surface of the part.

I have found that there is a very fine line between creating either a blob or a hole, and that having a well tuned extrusion multiplier and nozzle temperature to be important.

I must admit I have it working well through a 0.5mm nozzle with 0.3mm layer height, but am struggling to get it working as well with a 0.5mm nozzle and 0.2mm layer heights. I have yet to do any serious testing with the 0.3mm nozzle and this profile, but judging by your prints, it looks like it can be made to work fairly well.

The gap size is currently hard coded into Slic3r. Perhaps I should either bring it out as a setting, or improve the algorithm for calculating the gap width (currently one extrusion width).

Brilliant – absolutely brilliant! The quality looks superb and gives me something to aim for. The slic3r thing is interesting too and I will keep my eye out for the next version as the blobby thing is something which I would love to eliminate from my prints which are getting better almost every day.

Thank you for posting Richgain.
