Edges curling up
on: May 18, 2012, 13:50

Hi guys,

I have the problem that when printing slight overhangs (not much really), the edges and corners of the printed piece start to curl upwards layer by layer. This is not a problem of not sticking to the plate, it sticks just fine, but for some reason the edges seem to raise a bit higher than the rest of the print up to a point where the nozzle hits the print and pushes it down (or even worse off the plate).

It's a bit worse with extra cooling fans on than without them. Any idea what the reason is and what I can do against it?

It's warping caused by cooling of the top layer with insufficient material underneath to hold it down. Fans will cool it more effectively but not stop it warping if the initial temperature is hot enough to keep the plastic soft. I still have that problem too.

Printing at a slightly lower temperature is probably your best bet. If you go too low the extruder will fail to push the filament through and the hobbed bolt will grind into it.

You can experiment to find the lowest practical printing temperature by heating up the nozzle, setting all the motors to idle and turning the large gear by hand. Reduce the temperature slowly and feel the resistance increase as you push a steady stream of filament through.

@richgain

were you already able to print thin wall/overhang stuff with good quality with your huxley (something like this: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:14905)?

if yes, what slicer did you use and what is your setup (temp, cooling fan, etc.)

i was trying to print the polycup (link above) but the PLA curled up so much that it pushed the whole bed down at some point … then i aborted the print before it got worse. i used slic3r, layer height 0.3, one cooling fan and black PLA from faberdashery at 190deg hotend and 50deg bed temperature.

No, I still find these really steep overhangs, like the first 10 layers of your Polycup, very difficult to print. I've been trying to print this ancient statue – http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17601 – and it keeps crashing out 1/3 of the way up.

Try lowering the nozzle temperature to 180C or maybe even 175C, or maybe try with the support option turned on and see if it helps.

do you use the cool function in slic3r? Even without the fan control it works great just to slow down the printerspeed.

yes, i use it with these settings and one 40mm cooling fan (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:15899):

have you successfully printed one of the mentioned models (or similar) with PLA and if yes what were your slic3r settings?

http://www.thingiverse.com/image:102612 has quite steep angles and took some tries (supply3dpla PLA).

In my experience faberdashery PLA is a bit more tricky to cool down (printing with 180°C). I use a 80mm PC fan at constant 100%. Settings: 20 sec layer limit and 10mm/s minimum speed.

Have you any other PLA at hand to test this?

not at the moment but i'm waiting for some more info in the other thread about this material:

http://www.plastic2print.com/en/plastics/1-75mm-pla-filament-black.html

faberdashery has very consistent quality and a nice color palette but at this stage where my prints are not nearly perfect and i have to do much more tuning on my huxley i think it's a waste of money to buy the expensive faberdashery PLA :(

Where do you connected the fan to on the board?

I make things

That depends on which version of Huxley you have (i.e. mainboard / heated bed / firmware).
