my first prints

Finally my huxley is up and running – so here is a picture of a couple of my parts.

I guess it's not bad for the first print, but how can I improve edges and gaps between the lines?

I played around a little bit with temperature and E steps/mm but still gaps and trops…

I use the provided PLA – is the result better with ABS?

I have read a lot here in the forum about Kapton tape and Acryl as base-plate – did they but the kapton tape and acryl on top of the aluminium plate?

Thank you in advance for your help and advices

Well done on getting your machine up and running – a good start!

I think that you are on the right track when it comes to playing about with the E steps/mm setting but you need to be a wee bit more scientific. Take a good look at this thread with the aim of using the technique described by Rich:

I would also double check that your bed is as level as it can be.

When it comes to print surfaces, many people use blue masking tape directly onto the aluminium, others stick masking tape onto a glass plate and then stick or clip that onto the aluminium. (Kapton tape / masking tape – take your pick). I have never tried acrylic sheet but I know that some have down so despite the warning in the Wiki (somewhere).

I also found lowering the layer height a huge improvement. To avoid the bumps on the sides try to increase the retraction length.

A simple and effective way to stop dirt particles clogging up your nozzle is a little zip-tied sponge piece on the filament right before the extruder. Most quality improvements really can be made by playing with layer height, temperatures and the e-step.

Also using slic3r as a g-code generator helps alot (at least for me)… see http://www.emakershop.com/forum?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=617 for configurations that fit the eMaker Huxley

Two comments from me.

Firstly, much like my own first prints, the extruder is pushing out too much plastic. In PrintRun, go to the Skeinforge/QuickEdit menu, and look for Filament Packing Density (ratio) in the top right hand corner.

Enter a new value for FPD (sensible starting ranges from 0.8 – 0.99), load an STL file of a small test block piece to create a new gcode file. Load the gcode file and print. Keep trying new values until you get a smooth top surface.

Secondly, there are irregular gaps between some of the lines. These usually indicate that your belts are not tight enough. They should feel firm to pressure and vibrate a little when plucked. When the belts are too loose there will be some backlash when the motors change direction meaning that the straight lines in the infill will not be quite straight.

thank you for this comprehensive advices.

I'll try all of them as soon as I get back to my printer and show you my results.
